How will I know?

I forget the exact date, but it was around Fall of 2013.  I had been asking God to reveal to me if this man was THE man for me.  One day while sitting outside waiting for my class to begin, I got bold and a little playful with God.  Be careful about doing this!  I asked God, "If this is the man for me, turn that nondescript cloud into a heart shaped cloud."  Know what?!  He did!!  Know what?! Nothing has changed in my circumstances with said man.

In Genesis 15, God comes to Abram in a vision.  First He tells him not to be afraid...gee I wonder why?  God says: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward."
Abram says: (Pam paraphrased) "What do you mean my very great reward? I have no children!  Children are great rewards"

Single side note: what do you consider a reward?  Is it children? Or is it a husband/wife?  Be honest!  I am not saying God promises either to me or you.  But this thought in the background of our minds colors the way we think!

Back to the story...
God makes a HUGE promise to Abram.  Abram believes God.  Abram believes first and then He gets bold with God.  "How can I know?", he asks God.  Okay, is it not enough that God Himself just made a promise to you?!!!  God is so patient with us!  He understands our need to know.  God doesn't get mad at Abram for asking, He shows him! But what God shows Him is that yes the promise is going to come true, but there was going to be a waiting period and a work period.  Abram's people were going to be mistreated, feel unwelcomed but, in the end they would come out with "great possessions".

What is my take away from this?  In my situation, I asked God to show me.  I believe He did.  Now the work and the wait.  If you want to be bold with God, be prepared to HEAR His answer and do not falter in your commitment to what He reveals.  Also, do not take asking God for a sign lightly.  Be prepared for the the answer to be NO.  I've had plenty of those too.  Ignoring them leads to more pain and scar tissue.  I'll share some of those stories on another day.
